Alecto, Tisiphone and Megaera were collectively known as the Erinnyes or The Furies. Gaea gave birth to them after drops of Uranus' blood fell on her. They had wings and serpent hair and punished people who committed 'unnatural' crimes, generally matricide. They pursued Alcmæon who had killed his mother. They also pursued Orestes for the murder of his mother (in Æschylus' Eumenides) who they drove mad, until he appealed to Athene who held a trial which Orestes (with Apollo's aid) won. They were furious at their loss, but Athene appeased them by giving them a grotto in Athens where people would offer them sacrifice, and named them the Eumenides, or "well-meaning".
