The son of Zeus and Europa, brother of Minos and Sarpedon, adopted by Europa's husband, the king of Minos. He was a ruler of part of Crete but then fled to Boetia and married Alcmene. He was a very just ruler and became one of the judges of the underworld.

One of the twelve Titans, daughter of Uranus and Gaea, married to her brother Cronus. Aware of the prophesy that his own son would overthrow him, Cronus swallowed each of their children as they were born. However Rhea tricked him and gave him a stone instead of Zeus who was then raised by a goat. When he was of age Rhea helped him to give Cronus a potion which made him cough up their other children - Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades and Poseidon.
